I consider our marriage to be very special. If you ask Mandy why that is, she will give you the same answer every time: “We work at it.” When you see Mandy and my online highlight reel, it can sometimes give the the false perception that it’s perfect. It’s not. It’s special. There’s a difference. We have healthy habits like date nights, TV time and other shared interests we enjoy. But sometimes that’s not enough. On our tenth anniversary (of dating), a year before getting married, we had the biggest argument in a decade. The days that followed were the first time I thought our relationship could end. I don’t know if that was optimism, arrogance… or both, but it was the first time the thought of separating crossed my mind. It was terrifying. So we dug in and worked at it. We started seeing a marriage counsellor regularly and put into practice what we discussed in our sessions. Those sessions became less and less frequent to the point where we go a few times a year or so for maintenance. I share this on our 3rd anniversary because as much as I want to talk about how the relationship has never been better (and that's true), it has not always been easy. But there’s one thing I know for sure: my wife is the person I will do the work for as long as she has me around. I love you ❤️

Realtors, is it worth it to fly across the country for an industry conference?

I say, yes!

Conferences provide an opportunity to learn and skill build from specially selected professionals who are speaking on topics relevant to you.

They offer social networking opportunities to deepen relationships with coworkers and new contacts. Remember, this is your job, and you want to have a strong work culture and rewarding memories!

You can also build your referral network. I find this especially helpful for realtors from BC and Victoria island as it’s such a destination. People move here from all across the country! Make sure listing agents in Ontario, the east coast and Alberta know you!

Finally, it’s a chance to get great content. Photos and videos of you engaging with your peers, “flying in” and educating yourself, show your audience how committed you are to developing yourself and serving your clients.

This on again off again cycle of real estate is wearing you out, and probably causing a lot of anxiety.

Sometimes it seems like there isn’t a person in the world who is selling their home, and then next month you’re listing 4 properties all at once, and you haven’t seen your family in days.

There are techniques that reduce the volatility of your business, and we went over some of them in this week’s Coaches Corner.

One is to do daily or weekly marketing activities, and stagger your projects.

You don’t want to drop ads, organize a client event, send out a newsletter, and a new social media campaign, all at once. You’re probably panicking about where the next deal is coming from, and unconsciously starting a cycle of boom and bust.

This is another scenario where systems and good habits pays dividends.

Don’t just send a newsletter. Instead:
✔️Build a newsletter template
✔️Plan three versions of it, and
✔️Schedule it over the next three months.

Don’t post frantically to social media.
✔️Build templates
✔️Create a library of content that you can publish regularly.

Instead of doing all the things frantically, do one thing well.

Build systems, that layer on top of each other so you have steady marketing that’s laying reliable inroads for new business.
